More awesome advice from expert dietitian, Erika Kaufman, of the Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa. Being healthy means eating healthy this New Year. We talked about some easy ways to cut calories in our last segment, and now onto snacking! Yes…we pin-pointed a few fun foods that will help boost your energy, keep your blood sugar up in between meals and prevent you from overeating…
The last thing you want to do is load up on simple, refined carbs. Mix and match fruits, veggies, and protein. Treat your snack as a ‘mini-meal’…think 100 to 200 calories. Hummus is an ever-popular choice for your protein fix. Another single serving snack that Erika recommends is an apple with almond butter spread (a healthier alternative to peanut butter). When you combine fiber with protein, you’ll stay full longer!
One of my all-time favorites is Greek yogurt. Look for the non-fat varietal and add your own fresh fruit…this is the best-case scenario for your caloric intake. If you’re on the go, you can get the kind with fruit already inside. You won’t be cheating 😉
Need something to nibble on while at work? Popcorn is whole grain, portion-controlled and only 100 calories! Easy eating that goes a long way! For more delicious recipes and fun food and wine pairing ideas, subscribe to my newsletter.
