There’s an ever so slight hint that fall weather is on its way, so us red wine fans are in luck. It’s tailgating time too, and I’ve got a couple of affordable great reds to recommend that are easy to find at most H-E-B’s.
First, Chain Gang. Gotta love the name on this wine…makes it easy to remember and easy to find amid the hundreds of bottles on the shelves at HEB. I first tried this wine a couple of years ago–I liked it then, and I like it now. This 2010 has a nice brightness. Loads of black cherry and blackberry grab your taste buds, and the finish has a slight hint of vanilla. This wine is a real bargain at under $20 and would pair great with grilled meats, lamb, pork and grilled chicken. Just might make the perfect tailgating wine. It’s not too heavy, so even if it’s still hot outside this red works!
Up next, Parlay. If backbone is what you need at the dice table, then this is the wine you want open on that table. This red Petite Syrah blend from Napa is actually made by the folks that produce the juicy, rich Ramian wines. In fact, the winemaker not only trained in Bordeaux but also went to Texas Tech–a fellow Texan and Red Raider! Parlay costs less than $20 — ever priced its big sister Ramian Pinot Noir? It sells for about 4-5 times that. This wine is available at H-E-B and pairs great with a hearty steak!
