It’s nice to see this country’s attraction to wine turn into a full blown love affair. We’re discovering what the Europeans have known for centuries – wine not only tastes good, but it also has the ability to make total strangers instant friends. Sharing wine with family and friends is a tradition the ‘old world’ folks have embraced for thousands of years.
Almost every year we meet a group of friends in Napa for the Quintessa release party. In the photo we’re on the beautiful patio at Domaine Carneros.
I enjoyed last week’s line up of wine and food events for the New World Wine and Food Festival. From a luncheon at the Becker Vineyards to the Grand Tasting at the Grotto downtown, wine (and good food) is the common thread that brings thousands out over the course of the week to try, taste and talk about good finds.
Apparently, they like to do the same thing at the Vatican. Did you know that the highest per capita consumption of wine in the world is in Vatican City? France is third according to the Wine Institute. We’re way down on the list, but our numbers grow every year.
Good for the wine biz guys, but even better for us. Exploring good wines with good friends is what makes good memories. We may be the ‘new world,’ but I can’t help but love some of those old world traditions.
