It’s August — and that means we’re officially in the Dog Days of Summer here in the Lone Star state! For all you hot dogs (get it?!) out there, here’s a few frank-ly delish ideas to do up your dog!
Go Beyond Ketchup & Mustard!

This ballpark beauty-in-a-bun may have German roots, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to history! Good Dog Houston has turned dressing dogs into an art form, with tried and tested Tex-Mex toppings on the Guac-a-dog [above], featuring a fresh “deconstructed” guacamole salad on top of a hot dog — and drizzled in roasted garlic aioli! You can get the recipe right here.
“This particular dog came about during a Cinco de Mayo party we catered, and it’s been on the menu ever since!” says Daniel Caballero and Amalia Pferd, co-owners of Good Dog Houston, who turned a favorite food truck into a brick and mortar restaurant in Houston’s Heights and Montrose neighborhoods.
Dress Up That Dog!
Frank’s Hot Dogs in Austin and San Antonio kick up their dogs with house-made sausages that feature items you’d find in the artisan cheese section — like the Fico Anatra, with duck and pork sausage dressed in fig mostarda, crispy shallots, and goat chevre on a homemade bun. Not feeling the standard 8-pack of ballpark style hot dogs and plain ol’ yellow mustard? Pair a venison dog with your favorite fruit compote! Pick your favorite cheese, fig spread or flavored honey, then give it go!
Bring the Party to Your Plate!

There’s a reason why so many holidays involve grilled hot dogs — they’re delicious and they’re easy to prepare for a lot of people. Have some fun with them the next time you’re having a get together — and kick up those condiments! Outside of the regular chopped onions and relish, try pickled peppers, fresh relishes, or Good Dog Houston’s Apple Horseradish Slaw or House Giardiniera, a Chicago favorite!
You can also give your hot dogs a theme! Go “Hawaiian” with teriyaki sauce, bacon, pineapples, and red onion — or go “Buffalo” style with blue cheese dressing, slaw, crumbled blue cheese, and Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Sauce. Happy sampling!
