The aromas are always extraordinary! Do leave your diet at the door for the 8th Annual Corona Paella Challenge in San Antonio. This year was the first time the event was held on the South Side- a fantastic setup at Mission County Park! Top chefs from around San Antonio, the state of Texas, the US and beyond came together for one EPIC cook-off–all for a good cause too! Scholarship money for culinary and hospitality students.
The Challenge is curated by Chef Johnny Hernandez (La Gloria, El Machito). This year saw 40 professional chefs and 12 participating high schools creating a total of 52 piping hot paellas! Sysco Central Texas has been a sponsor each and every year, supplying much of the ingredients that go into making this festive, family affair what it is today. A HIT!
Congratulations goes out to all the winners, including Chef Juan Carlos Bazan of Toro Kitchen & Bar (a fabulous new spot for authentic Spanish cuisine off 1604) for earning the People’s Choice Award!
If you haven’t done so already, check out our short re-cap video of all the fun from 2017. It features commentary by star chefs Jason Dady and Robbie Nowlin, along with Mr. Hernandez himself. Watch these sizzling creations jump off the screen! Until next year, here’s a few of our favorite snaps…
