There’s no better time to share a meal with loved ones than during the holidays. The spirit of the season is alive and well in the Bayou City! I’ve got two new restaurants you ought to try, plus a revamped menu at one of my very favorite spots…
Many of you know, Masraff’s is a place near and dear to my heart. The food is consistently fabulous, though it’s the family, Tony Masraff and his son Russell, that have left a lasting impression. They are wonderful people who have done much to give back to the local community.
Right now, features on the new fall menu include an INCREDIBLE veal chop, locally-sourced and chipotle marinated, plated with corn risotto and a rich, smoky ancho chile sauce.
I’ve always said Masraff’s crab cakes are my favorite in the entire city – there’s absolutely no filler! Masraff’s seasonal spin sees the addition of a bourbon vanilla sauce that’s to die for…
Fig & Wasp is a newer place on Washington Ave that serves Mediterranean inspired food from Executive Chef Jeff Rowley. The space is very cool too, complete with a beautiful outdoor terrace to enjoy on the right night.
From Spain, a quinoa Paella [below] with all of the benefits of paella w/o the carbs, and from Italy, F&W’s braised Short Ribs in a bacon maple Tunisian glaze with sweet potato hash…
My last foodie find is a Greek restaurant in Rice Village…Helen Greek Food & Wine. Such a cool dining experience; a cozy spot with beautifully preserved original architecture. It feels very ‘New York’ or San Fran. I love the Grilled Feta-Brined Chicken, as well as what I’m calling one of the best new salads in the city – Helen’s Orange & Fennel Salad – with red onion, feta, kalamata olives and mint:
