***UPDATED June 25, 2015***
A healthy child is truly a gift from God. But I will tell you after years as a journalist covering a wide range of stories affecting families whose children are born with challenges, I’ve heard countless times what a blessing these children are to their parents as well.
Such is the case with a little boy in Central Texas named Rowan. Rowan was born with a rare digestive and bone marrow failure disorder, a disorder so serious he’s endured 69 surgeries and many years has spent more days in the hospital than out.
Rowan’s dad is a friend of mine. He and his family have suffered through countless sleepless nights managing Rowan’s health, but his dad will tell you this child has brought countless blessings into his life. Dad says he’s learned more from Rowan than any other person in his life. This amazing little boy is a wise soul.
You see, Rowan sees himself as a survivor, a thriver and missionary of sorts to many other children around the country suffering with critical or terminal illnesses. Rowan works to raise money for a foundation that pays for these children to go to Disney World each year.
Last year, Rowan raised a whopping $5000 with an ingenious idea of telling his story on Facebook and selling his autograph. He also sold lemonade. He even sold his autographed lemonade recipe from his hospital bed while at Methodist Children’s Hospital!
You can help Rowan celebrate his 9th birthday this year by attending a fundraiser THIS Saturday, June 27th, from 11-3 PM at Copa Wine Bar on Stone Oak Parkway.
$20 for adults (or a $50 donation per family) will earn you a delicious plate of barbecue and a glass of wine or Rowan’s special fresh ginger lemonade and Italian Cream Cake for dessert!
The money raised will go to the Kidd’s Kids, the nonprofit originated by the late Kidd Kraddick. Cash, or checks (made out to “Kidd’s Kids”). No credit cards please. 😉
I hope to see you there. For more info on Rowan, please contact Brian 210-325-4942 or Carrie 210-573-0118. Or visit:
