After a slow start, spring is FINALLY here in Texas. It’s always a good time to lighten up on food and wine, once the seasons shift in favor of warmer weather. Goodtaste has the latest selections from Ralph Cortez, my resident Wine Guy, at H-E-B.
You can never go wrong with a quality Sauvignon Blanc – I keep a bottle in my refrigerator year-round! According to Ralph, H-E-B is selling a large volume of them right now. Our pick? Geneseo Cellars from Paso Robles.
This very light style white wine is a perfect pairing for any seafood ventures…seared scallops, white fish, Mahi Mahi come to mind. Nice and refreshing with lemon and lime, passion fruit flavors. All and all, a great California wine to ward off the Texas heat. And it retails for under $10.
Who doesn’t love a good Pinot Noir? This De Loach is delightful; a lighter to medium-bodied Pinot with a small portion of the wine aged in seasoned oak barrels. Dark cherry on the nose…hints of vanilla. Enjoy a glass with chicken marsala, perhaps some duck with mushrooms, or on its own. Under $14.
Our final find is the Trivento Reserve Cabernet-Malbec blend out of Argentina. It’s a bigger red than the Pinot, but with a little bit of finesse! There’s a lot to this wine. I love the earthy characteristics of many Argentinian wines. This vintage is a fit for any grilled lamb, BBQ chicken. You’ll taste blackberry, plum…a slight hint of mocha. Also under $10.
Always keep in mind: Anytime you buy 6 or more bottles — including 1.5 liters, sparklings as well as items already on-sale — you’ll save an additional 10% on your total purchase. Now is an excellent opportunity to shed those winter woes! Happy browsing y’all.
