After a slew of well balanced but ‘unremarkable beers,’ Founders founders, Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers, along with the tight-knit crew at this grassroots, Grand Rapids brewery, decided it was time to shake up the formula — and there was no turning back! Today, the brewery that strives for complex, in-your-face ales, with huge aromatics, bigger body, and tons of flavor is one of the highest rated craft setups in the country!
Some of its first labels shown an old black and white photo of the original Canal Street breweries with the word “Founders” above it. Thus the company became known as Founders Brewing Company…simple, yet strong.
For the past four years, Ratebeer.com has named Founders one the top four breweries in the world! Wow! There are also several beers listed in the top one hundred beers of the world, including the Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) and the Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) — which ranks #4 (out of 100) on Beeradvocate.com. These guys are the real deal. And they’re launching statewide this month with draught, so be sure to look for Founders on tap in Texas!
Plans are firm to start off with distribution of kegs to dozens of taverns and restaurants in several Texas cities. The Lone Star State will now have the opportunity to enjoy Founders ales with bottles coming soon. Founders will offer all of its beers, from year-round selections such as Scotch Ale and Dirty Bastard to award-winning seasonals and specialties, as they become available.

Perhaps the first ale you should try is their feisty flagship: Founders’ Dirty Bastard. It’s a Scottish Ale “with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power to give it the bad attitude.” With a description like that, I’m intrigued to say the least!
