“Where do you want eat tonight” is a common phrase in our house year round…a phrase spoken several times a week. But, during the month of August we dine out more than we dine in thanks to Restaurant Weeks. It’s the one month out of the year that dozens of Houston’s best restaurants create special menus that are designed not only to attract new customers but also to feed the city’s hungry as $10 of every meal sold goes directly to the Houston Food Bank.
This year the program is even bigger also benefitting the Galveston County Food Bank and Montgomery County Food Bank with restaurants in those areas participating as well.
Kudos to radio talk show host Cleverley Stone who started this program back in 2003. It’s raised more than $1.7 million dollars since then to fight hunger in Houston. Quite an accomplishment!
If you’ve never been, here’s how it works. All participating restaurants will offer a three-course gourmet dinner menu for $35 per person, with $5 of each dinner sold benefiting the food banks. In addition to the dinner menu, select restaurants will also offer a $20 two-course lunch menu, donating $3 of each lunch sold to benefit the charity. All Houston Restaurant Weeks meals exclude beverages, tax and gratuity.
There are so many great choices but here are a few of my must dos to get you started…
Au Petit Paris in Upper Kirby – This little French spot is a gem…cozy, quaint and romantic!
Masraff’s on Post Oak Boulevard – Their new Hawaiian Wild Striped Marlin with Diver Scallops is on the dinner menu! Food here is always excellent and the wine list outstanding.
Olivette’s at The Houstonian – Excellent food and service…exactly what you would expect from this iconic Houston resort. Plus, the Black Forest cake with white chocolate ganache on the Restaurant Weeks’ menu sounds incredible!
Tony’s – Award winning chef plus a beautiful atmosphere…not to mention where my hubby proposed MANY years ago. J
Haven in Upper Kirby – Chef Randy Evan’s amazing shrimp & grits is on the dinner menu along with his delicious arugula salad. I’m in!
Katsuya in West Ave. – The cucumber martini is amazing and so is the Miso Marinated Black Cod that’s on the RW menu.
Americas in the Woodlands – The Churrasco is delish – a tenderloin dish with the tastiest of chimichurri sauces!
Charivari – A low key midtown spot with outstanding food…old world style French cuisine served with great attention to detail.
Cinq at La Colombe d’Or – Beautiful, romantic dining room with a top notch chef.
Something else that’s new this year—you can text a donation by texting the keyword ‘HRW’ to 20222 to donate $10 to the Houston Food Bank throughout the month.
