There’s a virtual goldmine right in our own backyard. Texas wineries! Texas Hill Country wineries have reason to be particularly proud.
The Texas Agricultural Department asked me to host their first-ever video podcasts called ‘Go Texan Wine’, and they turned out to be a fascinating learning experience. I was surprised to find out that the wine industry in Texas contributes more than 1.3 Billion dollars to the state’s economy. Statewide, we have more than 170 wineries, and that number keeps climbing.
Furthermore, according to Orbitz.com, Texas Hill Country wineries are the second most popular wine tourist destination behind Napa/Sonoma! Plan a day trip, weekend or longer and visit some of these fun wineries. If you venture out of the Hill Country, check out McPherson Vineyards up around my old stomping grounds in Lubbock. They produce a good sangiovese and cabernet. Or, head the other direction towards Aggie land and check out Messina Hof.
If you’d like to learn more about Texas wines, meet some of these entrepreneurial wine makers, go to the Texas Wines section on my ‘Vino’ section.
