Let me just say I absolutely hate to diet! I rarely do it because I think diets actually make me gain weight. I start craving foods I don’t even like when I’m on a diet. HOWEVER, I’ve found one over the years that I think is great!
Mike and I decided after a holiday season full of good food and good wine that we would get serious about dropping a few pounds, so we are doing the Atkins diet. No carbs basically which means no bread, no pasta, no chocolate and needless to say no wine…at least initially! The first couple of weeks are the hardest. It’s called the ‘induction’ phase, and it has something to do with your body looking for carbs for energy that aren’t there because you’re not eating them, so when it can’t find carbs it’s supposed to start burning fat.
Let’s just say it’s rather tense at our house. Mike handles these things really well-when he commits to a diet he does so heart and soul. Me, not so much. I fantasize about food – what my coffee would taste like with just a bit of dark chocolate or how delicious that steak would be with wine INSTEAD OF WATER! Alas, this too shall, pass because I’m sure I’ll cheat behind his back…afterall, I don’t want to weaken his willpower. 🙂
Actually, a moderate version of the Atkins diet as a lifestyle, I think, is a pretty healthy one to follow. When I turned 40 (#&%@ years ago) I started paying attention to carb intake, and it does make a difference. I also am a huge fan of the health philosophy of Dr. John Hernandez, who I had as a regular guest on the Living show. It’s all about staying healthy and preventing illness. He’s done wonders for me. And of course, there’s that excercise thing! After years of hating it, I’ve grown to actually look forward to it.
I’ll keep you posted on our progress, and keep in mind, before you start any diet, you’re supposed to check with your physician!
