My love affair with oysters began out west on a California vacation about ten years ago. It was a romantic getaway to start with, but throwing a few oysters into the mix didn’t hurt. I grew up in Houston with Gulf oysters, but as a kid I just wasn’t enthusiastic about eating them… raw or otherwise. Times have changed!

I’ve been a long time fan of Tony Mandola’s restaurant. The food is still the same spectacular Gulf Coast delights we’ve enjoyed for years. On our recent visit, we ordered from the appetizers only, and what a fabulous meal it was!
Wow…Houston’s very own Oxheart restaurant is named one of the ten best new restaurants in the entire country! How cool is that! The number one new spot that edged out Oxheart, according to Bon Appétit, is a very small neighborhood spot in one of my favorite cities.
It was at a grand oyster and wine tasting in Houston that I got a chance to pair one of my all time favorite Sauv Blancs – Girard Sauvignon Blanc – with some re-discovered oysters from a centuries old reef in Galveston Bay.

We’ve been exploring the Mendocino wine region and drove down along Hwy 1 to Tomales Bay, an area known for fresh oysters. The oysters, btw, were amazing. Several different varieties raw or barbequed on the half shell. But the real show was when we walked outside.
