Who’s up for seconds! Talented chefs from Round Top, Austin, Houston and San Antonio are leaving the brisket behind and putting their best fried chicken forward for the 2nd Annual Fried Chicken Throwdown!
This fun family event takes place on Sunday, June 12th with seven chefs competing against Bud “the Pieman” Royer at his famed Round Top Cafe for the title of Best Fried Chicken in Texas.
Already by Year 2 the contest has doubled in size with even more chefs. Among the illustrious lineup chosen to go up against Bud’s legendary fried chicken are Jack Gilmore (Jack Allen’s Kitchen – Austin), Brandi Key (PUNK’S Simple Southern Food – Houston) and John Russ of Lüke San Antonio.
As one of the judges for this year’s Throwdown, I can tell you, we’re in for a treat! Chefs will be judged on appearance, crust, flavor of dark meat and flavor of white meat. 1st and 2nd prizes will be awarded, as well as a People’s Choice Award. 1st prize includes a 2-night stay at The Prairie, a chic B&B by designer Rachel Ashwell.
Tickets are $35 (kids under 12 are free) and cover admission and fried chicken from all of the chefs. Brazos Valley Brewing Company beers, lemonade, Royers Round Top Café pie and Amy’s ice cream will be available for purchase. In addition, expect rockin’ tunes from Round Top’s Black Cat Choir all afternoon. In the event of rain, the event will be held at The Stone Cellar, located a quarter mile north of Royers Round Top.
All proceeds from the event go to Meals on Wheels! There’s no better way to kick off the summer than with some great music, cold beer and the best fried chicken Texas has to offer.
Hope to see you out there!
