One of the joys of being a journalist is meeting the incredible people whose stories are an inspiration to tell. These aren’t the predictable Hollywood stars or politicians or ‘high profiles’ but every day people who overcome incredible obstacles or give back to the rest of us in ways we often don’t recognize.
I’m on Cloud 9 right now after an unexpected encounter with one of those folks this weekend. We are in the middle of production on our new TV series Goodtaste with Tanji that premieres April 9 (mark your calendars Texas!), and today’s shoot was at the the Culinary Institute in San Antonio. One of the students in the class there was a veteran of our ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, a young man confined to a wheelchair who had been injured by an IED only two weeks into his tour in Afghanistan.
He told me he was taking the cooking class to ‘get back into life’ and Michael, please know that meeting you and witnessing your courage enriched mine today!
I also discovered that Michael is one the the recipients of a mortgage-free home that’s being given to him by H-E-B. He tells you in his own words how much that means to him in the video I’ve posted on my Facebook page.
So Michael, thank you for your service and your courage. And H-E-B, thank you for always being a local hero this community can always count on!
