Remember the ALAMO…beer that is! With Fiesta finally here and in good form, take a moment to appreciate a finely crafted beer from one of San Antonio’s own.
The formula for ALAMO was based upon it being a good introductory lighter style ale — and an excellent starting point for folks that were just starting to try micro brews, or wanted a micro brew that was more of a session beer.
Brewed with a fiercely independent spirit, paying homage to some of the proudest moments in Texas history, Alamo Golden Ale is THE beer and lifeblood behind Alamo Beer Company and its passionate founder Eugene Simor.
Here’s a fun fact: Early on in the ale’s development, ALAMO shared a nearly identical formula with the Fireman’s #4 of our friends out of Real Ale Brewing Co. in Blanco, TX.
In fact, until midway through 2009, the two flagship varietals were brewed out of the exact same brew kettle and fermentation tank!
Now that “the twins” have separated, Alamo (the company), as you may know, is constructing a brewery in downtown San Antonio and will be brewing by summer of 2014. A necessary growth spirt for a brewery whose roots are grassroots. The taste has changed slightly since the inception, but not much. Like anything worthwhile it’s only livened with age; a delightful maturation into malty manhood.
ALAMO is now less sweet and has a drier, crisper finish. It’s refreshing, light and very easy to drink — all biggies with me. Well-balanced comes to mind as well with a nice lace residue left on the glass. After all, the ale is golden and great to look at too!
Have a glass during Fiesta and soak up the colorful environment. What you’re drinking is not only local, it’s cultural!
