What a start to the new year! Actually, in moderation, these ‘luxuries’ can be good for you. Let’s start with red meat—a particular kind of red meat.
Akaushi is a fascinating breed of cattle that originated in Japan. A loophole in a trade agreement resulted in a small herd ending up in Texas. This red meat ranks far higher than the best American beef in healthy fats and lower in unhealthy saturated fats. That’s according to researchers at A&M University. So, if a heavy dose of protein and iron is called for in your diet but you are also watching your cholesterol, check with your doctor about Akaushi. It’s available at Bolner’s Meat Market on S. Flores. It is pricey but in addition to its sited health benefits, it’s also delicious.
Next, chocolate – dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidant properties. It’s also chock-full of magnesium and iron. There’s a wonderful book all about this healthy indulgence called ‘Chocolate a Healthy Passion’. Studies show dark chocolate helps release seratonin in the brain, a mood enhancer. Also, it’s said to promote better circulation even improve your memory! I’ve got a link to more info on the book. The cover is pictured here.
Last but not least – red wine. A lot of positive research keeps on coming about the potential health benefits of resveratrol, the compound found in the skins of red grapes. It’s believed to reduce bad cholesterol, prevent blood clots, even show the aging process. Grapes grown in cooler climates appear to have the most resveratrol – Pinot Noir, Malbec and Petite Sirah. Now, the studies have only been done on mice, and doctors are quick to point out that humans probably have to drink much more red wine than would ever be healthy to get the same lab results. But, the research is continuing. It goes without saying, check with your doctor before you make any big changes to your diet.
