Wow…what a huge response to the wines I took on KPRC News Sunday morning! Anchor Courtney Zavala and I talked about some great choices from perfect party wines to special occassion and unique gift wines.
Up first – wines perfect for your parties. When entertaining you want a good quality wine but one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Chances are you’re buying a larger quantity. The Cordorniu Cava is a wonderful choice – produced in the same manner as champagne, but since it hails from Spain, it’s known as Cava. This bottle is on sale at HEB for about $10.
Another PERFECT party wine is this Chilean cabernet savignon called Ochagavia. This wine costs only $10 and drinks like a $25-30 cab. Again, HEB. (HEB Bunker HIll is where I found this one.)
Next, something for the special evenings and meals we enjoy this season– a yummy Bordeaux. I recently learned a lot about Bordeaux wine at Masraff’s restaurant where they are featuring a number of the more affordable wines from that region on their menu this season. This is the second label of the famed Chateau Lynch-Bages, but it costs a fraction of the price–Chateau Haut-Bages Averous.
I found this wine at Spec’s downtown which has a fabulous selection of Bordeaux wines. My suggestion – head to Masraff’s and talk to Ben Roberts, the sommelier, and have a taste or two of theirs first. He sometimes has a special bottle open to sample by the glass. Or, enjoy something he recommends with a fabulous dinner!
More special wines – another second label from a well respected producer, but this one hails from Washington State–Col Solare. Col Solare is often referred to as the ‘Opus One of Washington.’ It’s a joint venture between Chateau Ste. Michelle and Italian great Antinori. Shining Hill is their second label wine. It’s an incredible red blend and only $33 a bottle…delish! HEB Bunker Hill has this.
Last but not least, the Wow! wine. Mirror…made by a boutique Napa winery this is a big, bold all cabernet wine. If you like Caymus Select or Silver Oak, you’ll enjoy this wine.
It’s also a VERY difficult wine to source in Houston…only 10 cases are available at the retail level, and I’m told all of those went to the HEB Bunker Hill Store. (That’s the store I usually head to for wine – Matt, the sommelier there, is wonderful.) BTW, HEB Buffalo Speedway most likely has the wines too.
As with any specific wine you’re looking for, call your HEB or Spec’s ahead to time to be sure they have it. Enjoy!!!
