What comes to mind when you hear “rosé wine?” White zinfandel? Sweet wine? Well, then you’ve gotta get more adventurous! There are some really nice, dry rosé wines that aren’t white Zinfandels, and they are perfect for our hot summer days. Plus, they pair nicely with a lot of different foods.
Not too long ago I was seeking advice about my TV pilot from a respected friend who retired as publisher of one of the largest privately-owned business publishers in the U.S. This gentleman happens to be a wine aficionado as well, and it suprised me when he brought up one of his favorite wines… a rosé wine. (Does anybody really have a favorite rosé?) “Tavel Rosé,” he exclaimed! Okay… he got my attention. If Ron likes Tavel Rosé, then there’s got to be something special about that wine.
There is! Tavel is a small town in southeastern France in the Languedoc region… very close to Provence. Rosé is what Tavel is known for. Tavel Rosé is called the Rosé of Kings as it was said to be a favorite of Louis XIV.
But the wine’s history isn’t its only remarkable quality. Its taste is quite outstanding. The Tavel Rosé I tried, Chateau de Trinquevedel, has a scent of soft perfume, cherry, a bit of rose and a hint of spice. It was dry not sweet and went perfectly with the goat cheese and crackers I was nibbling on at the time. That’s the great thing about most dry rosés… they pair well with a lot of different foods.
So thank you Ron for expanding my horizons on the wine front!
My husband and I are now exploring rosés. We like them dry, not sweet and have become quite fascinated with how very different they are and their aromas… delicate and sweet.
Some of my favorites:
- Chateau de Trinquevedel (about $19)
- Roccioli Rosé
- Hoya de Cadenas (a Spanish rosé-a bargain at $10)
And I must say a Texas Rosé is in the running… Becker Vineyards makes a nice rosé that, to my knowledge, is only available at the vineyard.
There’s a great opportunity at Becker Vineyards to explore rosé wines. It’s called Rambling Rosé, on August 16, and it’s part of the New World Wine and Food Festival_. Make reservations to attend… I went last year and cannot wait to go back. You’ll get a chance to taste a variety of rosés from different producers, plus the wines are paired with different foods. Go to blank”>the New World Wine and Food Festival website for more info.
So be adventurous, try a few different rosés and let me know which ones you like.
